About Dr. Mark Liponis

Dr. Mark Liponis is an internal medicine physician with more than three decades of experience focused on prevention, longevity, and the thoughtful application of medical science to individual health.

His work is grounded in a deep respect for the complexity of human biology and the body’s inherent capacity for adaptation and resilience. Over the course of his career, Dr. Liponis has developed a clinical approach that emphasizes careful listening, rigorous analysis, and highly personalized care.

Dr. Liponis spent 25 years leading the medical department at Canyon Ranch, where he helped shape one of the most recognized integrative health programs in the United States. His experience spans the full spectrum of care—from managing critically ill patients in the intensive care unit to advising individuals seeking to optimize long-term health and performance.

He is the author of several books, including UltraPrevention, UltraLongevity, and The Hunter/Farmer Diet Solution, and served as co-editor of the Textbook of Integrative Preventive Medicine. His work has been featured in national media, including The Dr. Oz Show, The Today Show, CNN, and The View.

Dr. Liponis’ research interests include the gut microbiome, genomics, and the role of lifestyle and emerging technologies in disease prevention and health optimization.

He is the founder of Stonover Health in Lenox, Massachusetts, where he maintains a deliberately small, referral-based practice. This model allows for extended visits, continuity of care, and a highly individualized approach to each patient.

Education, Training & Experience

Dr. Mark Liponis received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and earned his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at Berkshire Medical Center, where he developed a strong foundation in clinical medicine and the care of complex medical conditions. His experience also led to board certification in Critical Care Medicine.

 

Over the course of his career, Dr. Liponis has continued to expand his expertise through ongoing study in preventive medicine, nutrition, and integrative approaches to health. His clinical experience spans a broad range of medicine, from critical and emergency care and work in low-resource settings to a sustained focus on prevention and longevity. His work reflects a longstanding interest in the application of emerging science—including genomics, the gut microbiome, and advanced diagnostic technologies—to the prevention of disease and the optimization of long-term health.
